Inclusion & Diversity in Futurist Work and Foresight Training

Diversity is the bedrock of futures work. Without it, we end up creating future scenarios and strategic plans with significant gaps. Not only is it imperative to represent a variety of backgrounds, professions, and demographics in the foresight process, it's also important to ensure that diversity is represented in the Futurist community itself. This mix of views is invaluable in shaping the future.

Currently, there's an imbalance in the global Futures community. As of writing this, one in every four Futurists in the Association of Professional Futurists is female (25%), representative of a larger gap in the field.

Traditionally, the futurist space has also been dominated by an overly masculine approach including bold predictions, bravado, analytics and assertiveness. It's important to make the distinction that I'm not referring to gender, rather characteristics. Likewise, we've under-represented feminine traits; compassion, empathy, love, cooperation. Ironically, these are the traits we need to scale if we're going to steer towards a brighter future and solve the modern-day challenges of the world.

To be clear, this isn't about softening predictions or diminishing the boldness of our foresight. Rather, it's about enriching our perspectives by adopting a balanced approach to futures thinking; one that encompasses BOTH the masculine and feminine. It's time we swing the pendulum back to into balance.
