What is the Future of Sport? Sport has always been more than a game—it’s a reflection of who we are and who we’re becoming. As a former NCAA athlete and a futurist with a background in strategy and wellness, I’ve seen firsthand how sport can be a vehicle for growth, transformation, and self-actualization.
But the sports industry is shifting. Technology, human potential research, and cultural evolution are redefining how we play, train, and even think about competition. At the same time, we’re seeing cracks in the traditional realm of sports—declining sports events viewership, a shift toward the individual athlete, and a growing hunger for connection, meaning, and even spirituality in athletic performance.
As a futurist, my work centers on preparing leaders, teams, and organizations for the Wellbeing Economy—a future where growth is measured not only by profit, but by purpose, regeneration, and human flourishing. Within this shift, play often gets overlooked. Yet play is not frivolous. For Generation Alpha, it is a blueprint for the future. Why does this matter? Understanding how they play reveals how they will consume, work, and reimagine the world.
What is the future of Generation Alpha? Born every minute and numbering in the billions, a new generation is quietly beginning to exit the playground and enter the marketplace. They are Generation Alpha, the cohort born between 2010 and 2025, and their oldest members are now entering their teen years. More than just the successors to Generation Z, they are catalysts poised to trigger profound shifts in culture and commerce. As we look toward 2025, understanding the values, behaviors, and expectations of these digital natives is not just foresight—it is a strategic necessity for any brand, institution, or leader aiming to remain relevant.
As someone with deep roots in Hollywood—my father was born and raised in the Hollywood Hills, and my grandmother, Ann Richards, was a Hollywood actress while my grandfather, Edmond Angelo, was a director—I have a unique perspective on the film industry. This background has shaped my understanding of movies not just as entertainment but as cultural touchstones that reflect and influence our society. Today, as an award-winning futurist focused on the intersection between wellness and various industries, I find it crucial to explore how the future of movies can embrace themes of well-being and mental health.
Play is more than just a way to pass the time; it’s a fundamental part of our human experience. It shapes our creativity, social skills, growth and overall well-being. As we look to the future, it’s fascinating to see how the playscape is evolving, particularly in light of societal changes and technological advancements. Let’s dive into the future of play!
